Canada invites applicants in draws for STEM Professions. The department issued 4,500 invitations to apply in a category-based selection draw for applicants in STEM professions. Applicants required a minimum CRS score of 491 to be considered.

This was the first draw for applicants in STEM professions so far this year. Today’s draw follows a general draw from yesterday, April 10. IRCC invited 1,280 applicants with a minimum CRS score of any draw in 2024.

The first general draw this year, on January 10, needed a minimum score of a minimum of 546 in order to be considered & general draw scores continued to decrease over the past few months.

The last general draw on March 25 invited over 1,980 applicants with a CRS score of 524.

General draws consider applicants from all three Express Entry-managed programs, i.e., CEC, FSTP, & FSWP. Unlike category-based selection draws, a high CRS score is the main deciding factor in an applicant’s likelihood of obtaining an ITA.

What Is Category-Based Selection?

Category-based selection draws were introduced in May 2023 as a means of IRCC to better target Express Entry applicants with in-demand skills or human capital attributes.

The department introduced six categories in 2023 & confirmed earlier this year that the same categories will be used throughout this year. The categories are:

  • Healthcare
  • Trades
  • Transport
  • STEM Professions
  • Agriculture & Agri-Food
  • French Language Proficiency

Applicants must have an application in the Express Entry pool to be considered for category-based selection.

What Is Express Entry?

IRCC invites 1280 applicants in the first April draw. Well, Express Entry Program three economic immigration programs, i.e., Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades Program & Federal Skilled Worker Program. Through these programs, candidates are evaluated based on their human capital factors like work experience, age, education, language ability, & profession.

Every factor is assigned a score & added together for a final CRS score. Those with the highest scores are most likely to obtain an ITA for permanent resident status.

One of the major benefits of Express Entry is that an applicant’s final applications for PR will be processed more quickly than other economic immigration programs. Moreover, IRCC has a published service standard of six months for 80% of all Express Entry applications. The remaining 20% might take longer in complex cases.
