Canada’s Express Entry Sees Surge in ITAs for French and Skills

There have been an exceptionally high number of Express Entry draws in July; this is the seventh draw of the month. Program-specific drawings, including those for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and the Canadian Experience Class, have alternated with category-based selection draws.

Regarding drawings based on categories, a considerable quantity of ITAs have been sent to applicants who have proven to be fluent in French, with a total of 5,000 ITAs distributed across two draws. Furthermore, 3,750 ITAs were granted to applicants in the healthcare industry by IRCC on July 5 and 1,800 ITAs were granted to candidates in trade occupations on July 4.

The IRCC has also granted a significant number of ITAs for program-specific draws. As of July 18, the IRCC had extended invitations to 2,311 candidates under the Provincial Nominee Program and 6,300 candidates under the Canadian Experience Class. Applicants for these programs frequently already hold temporary residency status in Canada and work there. After a one-year break, the IRCC will resume program-specific draws on May 30, aligning with its declared goal of holding more domestic draws.

As stated in the Immigration Levels Plan, the IRCC established a new objective in March of this year: to accomplish its targets for permanent residents while both reducing and stabilizing the number of temporary residents in Canada.

Understanding Express Entry

A number of important Canadian economic immigration programs, such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), employ the application management system Express Entry.

These initiatives comprise a few of Canada’s main channels for hiring skilled workers. The CRS, which evaluates a number of human capital variables, is used by the Express Entry system to evaluate candidates. These variables include work experience, age, education, occupation, and language ability.

The candidate’s overall CRS score is determined by adding the scores from each of these categories. This score indicates the candidate’s ability to improve Canada’s demographic profile and make a meaningful contribution to the workforce. The chance of getting an ITAs for permanent residence increases with higher CRS scores.

The goal of Express Entry is to expedite the immigration process for highly talented persons, with an intended six-month application processing period.

Understanding Category-Based Selection in Express Entry

In May 2023, IRCC implemented category-based selection draws to better align with Canada’s current needs for specific skills and attributes. These categories were established after thorough consultations with various stakeholders, both external and internal. The selected categories include healthcare occupations, professions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), trades occupations such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors, transport occupations, agriculture and agri-food occupations, and candidates with French-language proficiency. These categories will guide the selection process for the remainder of 2024, with adjustments possible in the following year.
