IRCC extends the CUAET work permit application deadline. IRCC has recently extended the deadline for applying for a work permit under the Canada Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program.

The application deadline for temporary residents in Canada who are part of the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel program has been extended to March 31, 2025. These work permit applications will no longer be free from processing fees, in contrast to earlier CUAET arrangements.

The issuance of an open work permit, which has a maximum three-year validity period, is contingent upon the applicant’s passport expiration date and the fulfillment of biometric conditions.

Individuals who arrived in Canada on or before March 31, 2024, and who have been accepted under the CUAET standards, are eligible for this work permit renewal.

As of July 15, 2023, the CUAET program was no longer officially accepting new applications. The program’s approved applicants had until March 31, 2024, to join Canada in order to take advantage of all of its benefits, which included waivers of some fees.

Services to support the settlement of Ukrainians

Until March 31, 2025, CUAET participants who are currently residing in Canada are eligible to continue receiving a variety of free settlement assistance. These services include job placement support, language instruction in the official language, and citizenship preparation. Specialized programs are also available to serve particular groups, including elders, women, and members of the 2SLGBTQI community.

Pathways to permanent residence for Ukrainians with family members in Canada

The IRCC is currently accepting applications for a special pathway to Canadian permanent resident status for Ukrainians. This pathway will remain open until October 22, 2024.

Eligibility Categories:

First Category: Ukrainian Nationals

The candidate must be a citizen of Ukraine in order to be eligible under this category. They also need to show that they have a family relationship to a relative who is a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen. Among the categories of acceptable family relationships are:

  • Grandchild
  • Parent
  • Sibling or half-sibling
  • Spouse or common-law partner
  • Child (of any age)
  • Grandparent

Applicants in this group must provide a legal declaration from a Canadian family member. The relationship between the applicant and the family member should be described in full on this form.

Second Category: Spouses or Common-Law Partners of Ukrainian Nationals

This category is intended for people who are married to or in common law partnerships with Ukrainian nationals. The applicant must demonstrate, in order to be accepted, that their Ukrainian spouse or partner:

  • Has immediate family members residing in Canada, and
  • Is unable to leave Ukraine due to their situation, or is missing, deceased, or presumed deceased.

Candidates in this category must submit documentation attesting to the status of their spouse or partner and the reasons for their inability to leave Ukraine.

The goal of this pathway is to simplify the process for Ukrainians who wish to move to Canada. It also aims to facilitate the relocation of their immediate family members, allowing them to start a new life together.
