What Is Category-Based Selection?

Category-based selection draws were introduced in May 2023 as a means for IRCC to recognize Express Entry applicants with in-demand skills/ attributes & issue ITAs.

The department created six categories, which will remain in place throughout 2024. They are:

  • Healthcare
  • STEM Professions
  • Trades
  • Transport
  • Agriculture/ Agri-Food
  • Strong French Proficiency

The categories reflect any of Canada’s acute labor shortages as well as IRCC’s mandate to promote the French language outside of Quebec. French-speaking applicants have obtained the highest number of ITAs since the categories were introduced.

What Is Express Entry?

Express Entry is responsible for managing three economic immigration programs, i.e., CEC, Federal Skilled Trades Program, & Federal Skilled Worker Program

Applicants from all programs are ranked against each other within the CRS. In addition, the system assigns points to applicants based on their human capital attributes, like education, age, language ability, work experience, & occupation.

Individuals who obtain the highest overall scores are most likely to obtain an ITA for PR status to IRCC. Once applicants submit their final application to IRCC, they should obtain a final decision within six months.
