What Is Category-Based Selection?

In May 2023, IRCC introduced a category-based selection round of invitations. The department created six new categories targeting certain human capital attributes. One category is for applicants who can demonstrate proficiency in the French language. The remaining five categories are:

  • Healthcare
  • STEM Professions
  • Trades
  • Transport
  • Agriculture/ Agri-Food

Applicants must be eligible for an Express Entry program & have an application in the pool via one of the three programs in order to be considered for category-based selection.

These categories were chosen following consultations with stakeholders, like territorial & provincial government, employers, immigration researchers, & settlement services to assess the most critical gaps in Canada’s labor force & target the applicants who are best suited to fill vacant positions.

What Is Express Entry?

Express Entry oversees three economic immigration programs, i.e., FSTP, FSWP, & CEC.

These programs use the CRS to evaluate applicants based on their human capital factors, like language ability, work experience, profession, education, & age. Moreover, each factor/ attribute is assigned a score, which is added together, & further, the result is the applicant’s CRS score.

Once applicants have a CRS score, they are entered into the Express Entry application pool & ranked against other applicants. The applicants with the highest CRS scores obtain an invitation in the forthcoming Express Entry draw

In addition to the three Express Entry programs, in May 2023, IRCC introduced category-based selection rounds of invitations. IRCC created six new categories targeting specific human capital attributes. One category is for applicants who can demonstrate proficiency in the French language.
