IRCC has a spousal TRV processing time of 30 days. This measure applies to spousal candidates who have already applied for permanent accommodation in Canada. Instead of requiring candidates to remain in their home countries while waiting for IRCC’s decision, they can now arrive in Canada while they wait for their application to be processed.

Simply put, Canadians or permanent inhabitants with dependents or spouses abroad can now reunite with their families & begin settling in their communities.

Dependents or spouses on TRV aren’t eligible to study/ work in Canada until they are approved for PR or have obtained a study/ work permit.

In addition, the standards of service were declared on May 26 by Sean Fraser. He asserted that there was a TRV approval rating of over 90% of spousal candidates.

The high approval rating is partly because of the IRCC’s increased use of advanced analytics to pre-screen TRV applications before an IRCC officer reviews them for a final decision.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser stated that such use of technology allows the department to look across several factors on a candidate’s application to help determine the likelihood that they are going to be eligible for PR & put them in the category which IRCC officers more easily approve.

Processing Time For Family Class Sponsorship

Apart from the spousal TRV processing time, the time frame for permanent residence applications is 12 months via family class sponsorship.

However, now that spousal TRV processing time is of 30 days & IRCC has a service standard of 60 days for work permits, it could take as little as three months for a sponsored spouse, dependent child, partner, etc., to be able to arrive in Canada & begin working while they wait for IRCC’s decision on PR application.

Any Canadian citizen or permanent inhabitant might be eligible to sponsor a spouse, conjugal partner, or common-law partner for PR if they can sign an undertaking agreement to become financially/ economically responsible for the sponsored family for a number of years.

The amount of money needed to sponsor changes when there are some dependent children to support too.

Other Family Reunification Measures

IRCC made the TRV declaration in addition to another saying that spousal candidates, as well as their dependent children who reside with their sponsors in Canada & have temporary resident status, might be eligible for open work permits. In addition, they might apply for an open work permit as soon as they have submitted a complete application for PR to IRCC.

Previously, spousal candidates were only eligible for an open work permit if they applied for sponsorship from within Canada.

Moreover, Sean Fraser also declared that open work permit holders whose present permit expires between August 1 to December 31, 2023, will be eligible to extend their permit for 18 months using a free facilitated process.

This extension will include spouses & dependents of temporary workers, PR applicants, & spouses of foreign students.
